What Causes Cataract?

Diet Recommendations for Cataract

Cataract is basically a degenerative change of the lens and so it is essential to improve tissue oxygenation and micro-vascular blood circulation. Antioxidants are believed to prevent oxidative damage caused by free radicals. Antioxidants not only help slow down the progression of cataract, but they are also work as anti-ageing foods.


Recommended Foods:

  • Food such as Spinach, turnips, broccoli, peas, onions, garlic, ginger, celery, beans, seaweed, carrots, tomatoes, apples, and oranges are rich sources of antioxidants and are some of the foods that are believed to support the normal functioning of your eyes.
  • Vitamins A, C, E and Beta carotene are also very important for cataract. Always incorporate foods that are rich in these vitamins.
  • Food rich in Vitamin A and Beta carotene are carrots, moringa leaves/pods, squash, eggs and green leafy vegetables.
  • Food rich in Vitamin E are nuts, green leafy vegetables, nuts, vegetable oils,sweet potatoes, avocados, wheat germ, and whole grains.
  • Food rich in Vitamin C are apples, strawberries, emblica fruit (Amla), cranberries, kiwi, grapefruit, and orange.

Foods Moderate Consumption:

Oily, fried and canned food should be limited.


Foods to Avoid:

High Calorific food and sugar contents should be avoided. Frozen, preserved and non-organic food should be avoided as well.

Home Remedies:

  • Fresh juice prepared from curry leaves suffused in the eyes makes them look bright. It also prevents the early development of cataract.
  • Raw parsley juice, mixed with carrot juice, is effective in all ailment connected with the eyes and other optic nerves. It is good for weak eyes, ulceration of the cornea, cataracts, conjunctivitis and opthalmia or sluggishness of the pupils.
