What is Ulcerative Colitis?

Ulcerative colitis is an inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Ulcerative colitis occurs when the lining of the large intestine (colon or bowel) and the rectum become inflamed. This inflammation causes the bowel to move its contents rapidly and empty frequently, producing tiny sores called ulcers on the lining of the colon. The ulcers may cause bleeding and discharge of mucus and pus. Diet Recommendations for Ulcerative Colitis

  • Grains: Include crackers, and dry cereals

Sprouted seeds and grains, and whole wheat bread may be added gradually to this diet. All food must be eaten slowly and chewed thoroughly.

Foods to Avoid:

  • Avoid citrus juices, white sugar, white bread, and white flour products, highly seasoned foods
  • Highly salted foods
  • Foods and beverages that contain caffeine, cocoa, and alcohol
  • Foods cooked in aluminum pans
  • Dry fruits, berries, figs, prunes, and prune juice
  • Deli meats
  • Spicy sauces, dressings, pickles, and relishes with chunks
  • Nuts, seeds, and popcorn

Home Remedies:

Freshly prepared pomegranate juice is excellent for soothing the colon and balancing the immune system.

Conventional Treatment for Ulcerative Colitis

Your doctor may prescribe anti-inflammatory medication to reduce inflammation and swelling. More serious cases may need corticosteroids, antibiotics, aminosalicylates or surgery.
